    Location: Alderley Park, Cheshire
    Salary: £18,500 pa
    Working hours: Mon-Fri 37.5 hours/week, 1 hour for lunch. Core hours 8:30-17:00

The business develops and commercialises novel catalyst technologies to build carbon dioxide into polyurethanes and other polymers. The company’s innovative catalysts enable manufacturers to make a whole new generation of everyday plastics – for use in cars, mattresses, running shoes – turning waste CO2 into a benefit for business and our planet.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for independent planning of chemical experiments and product testing programmes, whilst also working as part of a team. This exciting placement opportunity will be mostly practical based, with tasks such as carrying out synthesis and analysis for customer-driven application development projects, however they will also need to document and capture all project work and outcomes in a clear, organised and comprehensive manner.


    About the placement

    This is an excellent 12-month placement opportunity for a Chemistry undergraduate to join a small team in an innovative company in growth mode. The successful applicant can expect a daily routine which will consist of 75% Laboratory work and 25% planning, report writing, meetings and materials sourcing.

    The placement student will:

    – Develop Polyurethane formulations and prepare compelling samples, generating valuable technical data to help market Econic’s advantages.
    – Characterise the properties of the CO2-based polyols for applications of interest to Econic’s customers.
    – Carry out synthesis and analysis for customer driven application development projects.
    – Document and capture all project work and outcomes in a clear, organised and comprehensive manner.
    – Maintain in-house laboratory equipment.
    – Maintain stock levels of consumables and glassware within the labs.
    – Proactively seek to ensure a safe working environment and follow Econic’s safe working practices.

    Job Accountabilities

    By the end of the placement, the successful undergraduate will have experience and understanding of:

    – Safe laboratory practices and their application in a small team setting where safety is considered the absolute priority and where every team member carries full responsibility for their personal safety and the safety of their colleagues
    – Independent planning of chemical experiments and product testing programmes.
    – Planning and conducting analytical experiments.
    – Polymer chemistry in the highly relevant growth industry of polyurethanes.
    – Product testing and quality assurance techniques.
    – The principles of industrial benchmarking and the connection between laboratory chemistry and commercial product performance properties. Statistical analysis and its relevance to industrial research and development.
    – The application of design of experiment principles to multivariate formulations.
    – Report writing and presentation skills.
    – Time management.
    – Team work in a highly energy innovation driven environment.

    Relevant Disciplines

    Undergraduates only working towards a Chemistry/Materials Science Degree.

    Additional Information

    Please ensure that you are willing and able to live within commutable distance of the company site before applying. This placement will be located at Econic’s headquarters in Alderley Park in Macclesfield, Cheshire with good links to public transport.

    During the placement your health will be monitored and activities may vary depending upon the results.

    This placement is expected to start September/October 2018.
